About the Artist:

Arc of Quasar are a four piece psych-rock band from Memphis,TN. The band formed in 2021 when Jon & Morgan Gaines joined creative forces, recording in Muscle Shoals and Memphis. A sound emerged, reminiscent of late 60s psychedelic pioneers like Grace Slick, CAN, Ultimate Spinach, and The Electric Prunes with a modern flare. Cultivating a unique blend of retro garage rock and raga rock, Arc of Quasar fuses spring reverb drenched harmonies and electric sitar licks that arise somewhere between desert psych and cosmic surf. It’s easy to see they have fun when they play live - enlisting help from Memphis music benchmarks Seth Moody and Graham Winchester of Turnstyles as their rhythm section. Don’t mistake their playfulness with insincerity though - they come to get down and they mean it. Arc of Quasar will make you want to dance, dream, and fall in love for the first time again.

New Breed Brass Band feat Trombone Shorty (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

On Made In New Orleans, New Breed Brass Band presents a brand of second line music in conversation with everything from Caribbean music to No Limit Records to modern R&B in the vein of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak’s Silk Sonic. Guest appearances — including from local legends Kango Slim, Wild Wayne, and the late great 5th Ward Weebie, as well as Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin — deepen the exuberant chaos. It’s joyful and vital and distinctly of the moment — music for and by New Orleans’ next generation.

Though the young musicians were ensconced in second line culture — band leader Jenard Andrews’ father is the great trumpeter James Andrews, and his uncle is Trombone Shorty, the New Orleans scene lynchpin — it took something of an intervention to help them find their own sound.

Says Jenard: “In New Orleans, everyone starts out as a Rebirth cover band until you find your thing. We were jamming out on some Rebirth stuff at Trombone Shorty’s studio. Shorty comes in and gives it to us straight: “This isn’t practicing, you’re just jamming on some Rebirth. You’ve gotta find your own thing.”

Trombone Shorty began coaching them up, and their sound took shape: The rhythmic versatility of the local jazz and funk scenes — as well New Orleans hip-hop from Cash Money to bounce — fused with second line culture to create something distinctly theirs. As Jenard puts it: “We wanted to get real New Orleans street on them.”

Audiences took notice. They toured North America and Europe, and opened for The Fray, Blackalicious, Dr. John, and eventually Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

With Made In New Orleans, New Breed Brass Band forge a new path for 21st century second lines — it’s just up to listeners to follow their lead down the parade route.

About the Artist:

It might’ve even been last night, but Steve Poltz just played the greatest show of his life. Guess what?

The next show will be even greater, making that show the greatest show of his life.

Are you starting to notice a trend?

He isn’t shy about it either.

Even after most likely thousands of shows (but who’s counting?), he hits the stage with the same amount of energy and always makes sure to declare, “This is the greatest show of my life.

It’s why he’s quietly emerged as the kind of live phenomenon celebrated passionately by a diehard fanbase worldwide and renowned as a festival favorite everywhere from Bluesfest in Byron Bay and High Sierra Music Festival in California and Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado to Cayamo Cruise (where he actually got married). It’s why his music has crept into pop culture via collaborations with everyone from Jewel and Billy Strings to Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm, Oliver Wood, and even the late Mojo Nixon. It’s why after over a dozen albums, he’s still creatively firing on all cylinders and critically acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone, Associated Press, Billboard, and many more.

Nevertheless, the next gig will be the greatest show for him (and maybe for you too)

About the Artists:

Born to the land of Woodstock, TN, Corey Martin, known affectionately as Corey Lou, came into this world as a born-to-be performer. Gifted with a heart for soul and the ear of a true musician, Lou began his journey as an artist from the young age of five singing the deep gospel sound of the Memphis choirs, to the rugged soul riffs so well trained at the infamous Stax Music Academy, to the polished classical content worthy of Carnegie Hall's stages. It’s safe to say that Lou does it all. A self-proclaimed “lover-boy”, the words of Lou’s work reflect a man in contemplation over life lessons, laments, and most deeply, love. Out of his desire to make meaning of these things, Lou takes each verse and chord as the chance to communicate a message of power with the world. His greatest hope is that in doing so, he can set a standard of success and true expression beyond the mainstream.

As a child, Lou's mother would always quote the saying,"it takes a village to raise a child" and that saying never left his heart propelling him to create his own village. In the year of 2020, Mr. Lou created his backing band officially naming it "Corey Lou & Da Village." He also established DaVillage Entertainment in 2022. To Mr. Lou, his music is his child to help change the culture of the world and spaces around him, while also creating a standard of success and true expression beyond the mainstream.
Corey Lou’s glorious timbres ricochet through your mind in a prominent manner that has his allure drawing you towards the compelling quintessence of his artistry and persona. The energy that he showcases through the seemingly smooth vibes takes you into a whirlwind of resonance that continues to intensify as his records progress.
Incorporating his gospel choir roots that scream out Memphis, there’s the originality that comes from this inimitable lane he has carved out for himself. Corey Lou & Da Village make it so you get everything you need through their intricately crafted soundscapes that are dedicated to making you feel the emotion within. With a hope that his music reaches whomever is meant to hear the message, Corey Lou creates music with the intention for it to be a vehicle of "generational peace, good energy, and fellowship for the world."

Eddie 9V (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Eddie 9V has powered up. From the day he first slung a guitar on a local stage, the Georgia-born bandleader announced himself as an artist to watch. But in the last few meteoric years, Eddie’s music has crossed oceans and airwaves, transcending his cult-hero status to become a beacon for fans of real music everywhere.

“Eddie 9V is something else,” wrote the UK’s Classic Rock of 2022’s chart-topping Capricorn. “A man who genuinely inhabits golden-era American roots, playing the most instinctive blues you’ll hear all year.”

You’ll find the proof on new studio album ‘Saratoga’, releasing November 22, 2024 on the fabled Ruf label. It’s a record that will thrill both newcomers and fans who have trailed Eddie since the start, showcasing his fresh, fiery spin on Southern soul, blues, rock and funk, with his signature wit and sharp observations of modern America placing him squarely in the here-and-now. “I do think it’s a wonderful road trip album,” he nods of the eleven originals co-written with his brother, the much-respected Southern musician, Lane Kelly. “I was shooting for a more Americana-type album this time, less blues songs and solos and more focusing on the songwriting.”

The new songs of ‘Saratoga’ deserve nothing less than your full attention. Eddie’s latest album announces his new groove with the crisp, purposeful beats of the opening title track, an instant favorite that gets under your skin with its almost disco- style harmonies and joust of horns and slide guitar (“That song is about being in a lonely tiny town that feels impossible to escape”).

Halo struts from the speakers on Eddie’s falsetto howl, before the lush yearning of Cry Like A River and Love Moves So Slow (co-written by Spencer Pope) brings vintage soul into the modern age. The brittle riffs and spacey vocal of Delta mark another gearshift, flowing into Red River’s reflective-yet-kinetic groove. Wasp Weather speaks to Eddie’s love of rapid-fire streams of consciousness. “That’s my favorite lyrically ’cos I like spewing words that don’t make sense into songs. ‘I got a big mud house that I can’t keep clean, it’s useless’ – I love that line.”

The album plays out in style with the trilling alt-folk of Truckee – “We got high and did shrooms and camped on the Truckee river in California,” he explains of the inspiration – the wistful Tides and Love You All The Way Down. Eddie even slips in a brass- blasting take on Mac DeMarco’s Chamber Of Reflection, before bringing the record home with The Road To Nowhere’s shuddering, tremolo-drenched country lament, his trademark twang utterly transformed into a vintage croon.

Eddie 9V is right: this latest album takes us all over the musical and emotional map, while announcing that his recent career peaks are just the start. “Capricorn was a big jump for us,” he reflects. “But I’m already writing new songs, y’know?”

East Nash Grass (Orion Free Concert Series)

About the Artist:

East Nash Grass is one of the hottest young bands in Bluegrass, picking up this year’s International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) award for Best New Artist and stacked with IBMA Best Instrumentalist winners: Grand Master Fiddle champion and AMA Instrumentalist of the year nominee Maddie Denton, Cory Walker (banjo), and Harry Clark (mandolin). Put them alongside charismatic frontman James Kee and bassist Jeff Partin (Rhonda Vincent, etc.) and you’ve got a powerhouse leader of the next generation in bluegrass excellence.

WSLR in Fogartyville calls them “a balance of undeniably hard-driving bluegrass alongside surprisingly introspective songwriting and earnest narration.”

They are far more than a group of impressive instrumental technicians. As a group that came together organically via set after set on Nashville’s East Side, playing tiny stages for the love of it between tours backing bigger acts, they have a hard-forged bond that’s reflected in their stage chemistry. Audiences freak out over how much fun these guys have.

As they work on the follow up to 2023’s “Last Chance To Win” — look for a release in the spring of 2025 — they now find themselves one of the most in-demand groups in Americana, fanning out well beyond the traditional bluegrass spots.

BoDeans (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

With countless tunes you know from the first note, rip-roaring gigs you can count on, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things,” You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” and “Closer To Free,” just to name a few. However, they still reflect the soul and spirit of the modern American experience on their fourteenth full-length offering, 4 The Last Time.

“The music of BoDeans has defined much of my life,” muses Kurt. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy. I wanted to creatively do something positive for the world instead of just taking from it. So, this is what I’ve chosen to do with my life. The music was always about the blue-collar dream of a better life, and it still is.”

BoDeans emerged out of Waukesha, WI in 1986 with the seminal debut, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, produced by T Bone Burnett. Following Outside Looking In [1987], Home [1989], and Black and White [1991], Go Slow Down [1993] yielded “Closer To Free,” which famously served as the theme song for the smash hit television series Party of Five. With a sought-after discography, their music landed hundreds of television and film placements. Meanwhile, they transformed into a proven live phenomenon by supporting the likes of U2, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, The Pretenders, and David Bowie in addition to gracing the bills of Farm Aid, Summerfest, and ACL. Speaking to the group’s legacy, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame permanently entrenched BoDeans in the Midwest Artists exhibit. Most recently, 2017’s Thirteen arrived to widespread acclaim from The Chicago Tribune and Glide Magazine who spotlighted the music’s “understated grace—an attribute that no doubt fuels the steadfast approach Kurt Neumann has employed of his thirty-plus years as a ‘BoDean’.” Along the way, NETFLIX’s The Ranch also utilized over 70 tunes from Kurt, and he launched his own podcast Staring At The World.

In the midst of the Global Pandemic, he wrote and recorded what would become 4 The Last Time in his Austin, TX studio.

“We have a classic guitar-driven midwestern rock pop sound,” he goes on. “I wanted to make sure there was still some music out there with guitars on it. I feel like I’m getting better at this in my fifties. So, there are a lot of those big rock songs we’ve done for years. I got that vibe down on this record.”

In the end, BoDeans make an impact through such honesty.

“For the next year, I’m going to be showing up in towns everywhere and trying to bring people together a little more,” he leaves off. “Come to a BoDeans gig, sing along, and forget about everything else. That’s why I play nowadays. I’d like to keep pushing that message as long as I can.”

Alejandro Escovedo (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Alejandro Escovedo's New Album ECHO DANCING is an Adventure in Life

No one has really ever been able to define themselves and their music like singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo does. His life in music of all kinds sometimes feels like a swirl through the sky, where his songs point out all the majesty and mystery of how he sees the world. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict, but once there, greatness always follows. It's just the way Escovedo is. It has happened over and over for decades, almost like a fateful agreement he has with the cosmos. There is a good chance it cannot be explained, especially by him.

Maybe that's because this is a musician who feels magic, both in himself and the world around him, and is open to the experience of whatever comes his way. It is not always easy, and can have a high demand on how a person lives. But it is the way that Escovedo is always moving forward.

Truer words were never spoken than Alejandro Escovedo's love for exploration in the music he writes and plays. The son of a Mexican immigrant and a Texas native, the sounds that Escovedo first discovered and then performed morphed into all kinds of exciting styles of his life. A member of the first-wave punk rock group The Nuns in San Francisco, he moved to New York and joined the Judy Nylon band and experienced the total electricity of the late 1970s there. Moving then to Austin was a radical shift of geography and musical style when Escovedo helped form one of the country's first so-called Cowpunk adventurers. It often seems like the man has been on a pirate-like adventure through the kinds of music he is drawn to. Those sounds are usually new and often have a strong edge of the avant-garde in them.

Deeply embedded in the burgeoning Austin scene in the 1980s, Escovedo was a prime architect in the new band True Believers, which included his brother Javier and Jon Dee Graham. In many ways the band helped build the gateway to the whole burgeoning Americana music scene which prospers to this day, but it was also the turning point for Alejandro Escovedo to take his life in his control and record solo albums. In the thirty-plus years since that decision has come a wild roller-coaster ride of groups, spinoffs, tribute albums and even original dramatic projects and experiments. In 1998, No Depression Magazine named him Artist of the Decade. For this musician, though, that was just the start of a life that twists and turns wherever Escovedo's clearly uninhibited imagination takes him.

"I said goodbye to certain phases of my life as I have grown," the musician says. "I greeted new acquaintances musically. And I was extremely surprised by the outcome. That is the thrill of being alive. I feel we have now made a beautiful collection of songs recorded in an effortless vibe of collaboration and camaraderie. I can't give Nicola and Antonio enough credit and thanks for their musicianship and wide-open approach to making this album. And I should also mention Ivano Giovedi, who incredibly engineered the recordings. He did an amazing job."

"Everyone involved has guided me to new approaches to my music, like other musicians have my whole life. I have always worked hard to discover new ways to tell the story. I've never hidden my love for Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Judy Nylon, Cluster, along with the Stooges, New York Dolls, MC5, Roky Erickson, Lightnin' Hopkins, Joe Ely, Terry Allen; you get the picture. There is always more work to be done and joy to be made. I am nowhere near finished."

Echo Dancing makes sure Alejandro Escovedo's evolving circle remains unbroken.

About the Artist:

"LadyCouch was born out of Keshia Bailey and Allen Thompson’s love for one another and their love for honest, soulful music. The pair seem to come from two different worlds, musically, with Keshia hailing from the straight-ahead throwback Soul group Magnolia Sons, and Allen from the psychedelic folk of the Allen Thompson Band.

Backed by a rotating cast of players who often tour with the likes of Keith Urban, Tesky Brothers, INXS and more, LadyCouch’s Appalachian upbringings and their genuine appreciation for Soul, Rock, Funk, Country and Folk allow them to build bridges across genres to create a sound all its own. On any given evening in Nashville it’s not uncommon to see folks from Old Crow Medicine Show, Maggie Rose, Jon Latham, Little Bandit, Drivin N Cryin, and many other Nashville mainstay musicians jamming with the big band with the nonsense name.

When LadyCouch is on stage, they do everything with a purpose and drive that’s rare to see in a group that large. While their sound might be reminiscent of the huge hippie orchestras of decades past, the group is by no means a nostalgia act. Their approach to writing, melodies, harmonies and improvisation is as original and refreshing as you can get."

Highlights from the band’s many eclectic shows have been handpicked by the band for consumption, including the most recent “Eggy Selects: Spring Tour 2023, Vol. 1).

Eggy’s upcoming record, “Waiting Game,” is set to arrive on September 6, 2024. Three singles (“A Moment’s Notice”, “Laurel” and “Gentle Clown”) have been released thus far. Co-produced by White Denim’s James Petralli, “Waiting Game” showcases the band’s artistry through a concentrated and refined studio approach as a compliment to their exploratory live shows.

Mak Ro (Orion Free Concert Series)

About the Artist:

Mak Ro is a duo of Filipino-American cousins based in Memphis, TN: Eric Makapugay (Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer/Songwriter) and Kristoffer Ruaro (Singer/Producer/Songwriter).

The duo sparked from a seemingly inconsequential guitar riff Eric improvised during a jam session, resulting in the first song they ever wrote together, “Elevator.” From that point on, collaboration has effortlessly flowed between the two, having a familial chemistry that can only be described as natural. Guided by their instincts, they have fearlessly forged their distinctive identity, demonstrating that their music is destined to exist. Their shared interest in R&B music bridges the gap between their individual tastes in pop and rock, creating a unique fusion of different genres.

Eric builds a sonic world in which Kristoffer carves out meaningful stories. As Filipino-Americans and for Kristoffer, a queer artist, Mak Ro conveys their perspectives through their storytelling, making their mark not only in their hometown of Memphis, TN, but also on a broader international stage.

Since breaking onto the scene in 2019, they've independently released 15 singles and a 4-track EP, all self-produced, recorded, and written. Most recently, Mak Ro released their highly anticipated debut album, Love in the Dark, in the fall of 2024.

About Kraftwerk:

Bringing together music and performance art, Kraftwerk concerts are a true "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”

The multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.  They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.

By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ‚sound scapes’ and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.

Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from Electro to Hip Hop, from Techno to SynthPop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert,  Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties.

The concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London), Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), Neue National Galerie (Berlin), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao) and they most recently played 9 nights at LA’s famed Walt Disney Hall.

In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)

About the Event:

TSC's offering at the Shell will be our 8th Annual Free Shout-Out Shakespeare Series production of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS -- William Shakespeare's wild commedia of mistaken identities.  It will run approximately 90 minutes without intermission.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

An exotic farce by William Shakespeare | Directed by Dan McCleary | Generously sponsored by Evans Petree PC in Memphis, and The Shakespeare Fund of Theater League of Kansas City

This madcap romp is one of Shakespeare’s most popular adventures for all ages with rhyming jokes, physical comedy, and outrageous events abounding across one day in this peaceful town on the Aegean Sea. Mistaken identities (including TWO sets of identical twins) and wild misunderstandings could explode into violence, but only the audience knows how joyfully this will end – or do you??

Running swiftly without intermission for 85 minutes, this production features 13 actors, including Michael Khanlarian as both master-twins and Lauren Gunn as both servant-twins.

About the Tennessee Shakespeare Company:

Tennessee Shakespeare Company's FREE Shout-Out Shakespeare Series produces free performances of Shakespeare in non-traditional, outdoor venues throughout the Memphis metro area with a multicultural cast of classical actors.

Tennessee Shakespeare Company is a professional, not-for-profit theatre and education organization in Memphis dedicated to performing live, diverse productions of William Shakespeare’s plays, as well as works of social significance by classical, Southern, and modern writers; and to providing innovative educational and training programming.  Founded in 2008 by Producing Artistic Director Dan McCleary, Tennessee Shakespeare Company is Memphis’ first and only professional, classical theatre.

5:45 PM: RUTHIE FOSTER
7 PM: NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS

About North Mississippi Allstars:

Nothing runs deeper than family ties. Brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters understand one another at the purest level. When families rally around music, they speak this oft-unspoken bond aloud and into existence. After 25 years, twelve albums, four GRAMMY® Award nominations, and sold out shows everywhere, North Mississippi Allstars open up their world once again on their thirteenth album, Set Sail [New West Records], welcoming other family (by blood and by the road) into the fold. As legend has it, Luther and Cody Dickinson started the band in 1996 as a loose collective of like-minded second-generation musicians who shared a local repertoire and regional style. Over the years, the lineup shifted by design, and each subsequent record offered up a different combination of collaborators. This time around, they mined the talents of Jesse Williams on bass and Lamar Williams, JR. on vocals. During the Allman Betts Band Family Revival, the Dickinsons first linked up with Lamar, son of the Allman Brothers bassist Lamar Williams, Sr., becoming fast friends and collaborators and eventually paving the way for Set Sail.

“The chemistry we have with this lineup is powerful,” observes Luther. “We are all second-generation musicians and share a telepathic, relaxed ease about creating and performing. I believe music is a form of communion with our loved ones and conjuring this vibe with members of musical families can be inspirational. Lamar and I are like-minded. I’ve never had the pleasure of working with a singing partner like Lamar. He has a true-blue quality in his musicality that will pull you in and break your heart. At the same time, Jesse grew up playing music with his brothers and his father—as did we. He plays like a sibling. We recorded the album fresh off the road and captured the energy we had worked up with him. I’m drawn to musical families, regardless of style. Playing with second- or third-generation players allows us an easy unspoken musical dialog. It’s not a big thing; it’s just what we do. We never had to figure out what it means and takes to be a musician. We all inherently know.”

They picked up this wisdom by osmosis. As sons of legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson, Luther and Cody have been producing records themselves since they were teenagers. Separately, the brothers have produced albums by Samantha Fish, R.L. Boyce, Lucero, Amy Lavere, the Birds of Chicago, Ian Segal, and more. Luther produced two records from Otha Turner, including Everybody Hollerin’ Goat, which was named one of the ten most important blues albums of the nineties. Luther and Cody co-produce North Mississippi Allstars records as the “Dickinson Brothers.”

“We learned an enormous amount from our father,” Luther says, “Cody and I made mistakes, but we’ve always believed in ourselves, and we had to learn for ourselves. Rock ‘n’ roll is self-taught. Each generation has to reinvent itself and shed the skin of the elders. On Set Sail, we feel as if we’ve once again ‘broken the code,’ and know what we want and how to get it.”

Following 2019’s Up and Rolling, which received a GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album,” Set Sail continues the band’s tradition of creating roots music that displays remarkable variety. Luther and Cody Dickinson dig in with the production and different guitar tones; the record sizzles with hard yet understated groove, grown folk music. Luther’s wide-ranging guitar style features jazz riffs, psychedelic sounds, and soulful slide. Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Cody draws on roots music, rock, jazz, rap, and other styles to create rhythms that propel the band’s sounds and move it forward. Their two aesthetics combine to create the band’s unique style, “Primitive Modernism,” melding the new and the old, traditional, and futuristic, crafted lyrics and improvisational music. Speaking of, the first single and title track “Set Sail Part I” [feat. Lamar Williams, JR.] rides a riff right out of the Southern Delta into the embrace of a horn section as the vocal interplay simmers on the line, “The water may rise again, but we shall set sail.”

The Dickinson brothers have recorded and toured with Mavis Staples, Charlie Musslewhite, John Hiatt, Robert Plant and Patty Griffin, G Love, Jon Spencer, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Los Lobos, and the Black Crowes. Meanwhile, their seminal debut, Shake hands with Shorty (2000), earned the band the first of four GRAMMY® nominations, and changed the Dickinson brothers’ lives forever.

Luther adds, “Quincy says, ‘Music gives back what you put into it.’ We have dedicated our lives to music, and it’s given us a fantastic journey that’s still only beginning.

In 1997, R.L. Burnside hired me and took me on the road. R.L., Kenny Brown, and Cedric Burnside taught me how to tour nationally after years of touring locally. The Shake Hands with Shorty tour in 2000 took Cody and I around the world and changed our lives. We never really slowed down.”

They forge ahead always as a family, first and foremost. “North Mississippi Allstars means family,” Cody concludes. “I get the joy of working with my brother. Our families keep growing too. There’s a sense of history. The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to record this music, so younger kids can hear it. I just want to make sure we pass it on. It’s a huge honor to be a part of this tradition.”

About Ruthie Foster:

Ruthie Foster's musical journey is as eclectic and vibrant as her soulful voice. Born into a family steeped in gospel tradition, Ruthie's earliest influences were the voices of her mother, grandmother, and the gospel singers she grew up listening to — artists like the Gospel Keynotes and the Blind Boys of Alabama. However, her path to becoming a solo artist wasn't a straightforward one. Despite a deep love for music, Ruthie initially shied away from the spotlight, preferring to play guitar, piano, and write songs for others.

Growing up in the rich musical tapestry of Gause, Texas, Ruthie found herself drawn to the diverse sounds and arrangements of local gospel choirs and musicians. Despite her reluctance to take center stage, Ruthie's talent was undeniable, and her mother encouraged her to step up and sing out. She stood out as a young black girl with a guitar in a choir scene dominated by pianos, but with her grandmother’s vocal coaching and encouragement from her mother and the church community, she recognized her own power — as a songwriter, a musician, and as a captivating singer.

After studying music at a community college in Waco, Ruthie decided to take a break from music and enlist in the Navy. The stage drew her once more, and she was selected to sing for the Navy band Pride, where she honed her skills as a vocalist and performer. A development deal with Atlantic Records led her to New York City, where she immersed herself in the songwriting community and learned the craft of writing songs that spoke to the soul.

However, Ruthie's journey took a turn when her mother fell ill, prompting her to step back from music and return to Texas once again. It was a period of introspection, caregiving, and deep bonding with her mother, and upon her return to writing and performing, it was to shape her voice as a singer-songwriter and storyteller. Drawing on her experiences and her musical roots, she began to craft blues, folk, and gospel-tinged songs that spoke to the universal themes of love, loss, and resilience.

Turning down a major record deal in pursuit of authenticity, she has stayed true to herself and her vision as an artist, signing with independent label Blue Corn Music to release Runaway Soul in 2002, followed by The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster in 2007, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster in 2009, Let It Burn in 2012, Promise of a Brand New Day in 2014, Joy Comes Back in 2017, and Healing Time in 2022. She has also released three live albums, Stages in 2004, Live At Antone’s in 2011, and 2020’s Live at the Paramount.

Now, with five Grammy nominations to her name and a new album, Mileage, set to be released on Sun Records, Ruthie Foster stands as a testament to the power of authenticity and resilience in music. Her soulful melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and unwavering commitment to her craft inspire audiences and fellow musicians alike as she continues to carve out a path that is uniquely her own.

About the Artist:

Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Memphis Harvest was envisioned as a one-time epic performance featuring a large cast of Memphis’s finest singers, songwriters and musicians on one stage performing Neil Young’s classic album Harvest. That first performance drew such overwhelmingly positive reactions from the audience and performers that the vision has evolved into an ongoing project featuring Susan Marshall, Van Duren, Reba Russell, Vicki Loveland, Mark Edgar Stuart, John Whittemore, Robinson Bridgeforth, Adam Holton, and a rotating cast of accompanists. In addition to classic material by Neil Young, this special Overton Park Shell performance will include a handful of original songs written by the band members that were specially selected to sit alongside Young’s songs and utilize the band’s strengths.

Los Yesterdays (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Founded by producer/drummer Gabriel Rowland and singer/songwriter Victor Benavides in Altadena, CA in 2017, Los Yesterdays remained – literally – a garage band for years, a chance for the duo to create their take on the sweet soul music that enveloped childhood experience as young Chicanos in LA.

In a Billboard article about them and their scene, it was noted - “…there is a generations-long appreciation for sweet soul music among California’s Latino communities. Eastern Los Angeles teens.... helped foster a love of sweet soul in the early ‘60s by covering soulful ballads by artists like James Brown... Those sounds.... were kept alive by record collectors and people who spent evenings cruising along East Los boulevards."

A chance meeting between Rowland and Now-Again’s Egon at a barbecue hosted by Beastie Boys’ producer Mario C got them talking about their favorite sweet soul 45s. Rowland pulled out his phone and played the first Los Yesterdays track he and Benavides created – “Mr. Yesterday” – and Egon immediately offered them an opportunity on his label. This was followed by an offer from Daptone’s Gabe Roth for his Penrose imprint. Now, after a series of singles including an unlikely Tik-Tok hit “Nobody’s Clown” and work with Trish Toledo, Los Yesterdays will issue their debut album, Frozen in Time on Now-Again in late Spring 2024.

Aaron James is gearing up to release new music and multiple projects in 2024, including a mini-documentary centered around his “Paint What You Feel” demonstrations. Whether it’s through the transparency of his songs, the honesty and overly self-aware nature of his stories, or his internal and external urge for reflection, Aaron continues to strive to be an example of the vulnerability it takes to create meaningful connection.

SMITH & MYERS [of Shinedown](Shell Yeah! Benefit Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Smith & Myers - the duo comprised of Brent Smith and Zach Myers - reimagine beloved chapters of the American songbook alongside their own bold contributions with nothing more than a microphone and an instrument or two. Their eloquent songcraft transmits powerful lyrics, intimate delivery, indelible melodies and glorious vocals uplifted by minimal accompaniment and amplified by maximum emotion. With two hearts and one truth, these lifelong musicians, longstanding friends, and eternal brothers delivered their double album in 2020 in two parts, Smith & Myers Volume 1 and Volume 2, comprised of ten original songs and ten brilliant re-imaginings of Neil Young, Post Malone, INXS, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, The Righteous Brothers, Billie Eilish, Peter Gabriel, Billy Idol, R.E.M. and Oasis. The releases marked Smith & Myers’ first full-lengths as a duo since issuing a pair of acoustic cover EPs, Acoustic Sessions, Part 1 and Acoustic Sessions, Part 2, in 2014. Fans instantly fell in love with the magic that is created between Brent and Zach both in the studio and on stage, with Smith & Myers live shows instantly selling out.

Smith & Myers’ Volume 1 and Volume 2, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer and songwriter Dave Bassett, encompass vulnerability, fearlessness, honesty, outrage, love and understanding. With no boundaries on what their songwriting could discuss, Brent & Zach explore everything from certain personal topics that they have left largely unexplored until now, to commentary on immigration and children being ripped from their parents, racial injustice, and the nature of social media – focusing not on politics, but on right and wrong and our connection as human beings. This is evidenced by the Volume 1 original single “Not Mad Enough” and the Volume 2 standout “Bad At Love.”

As one-half of the multi-platinum, record-setting band Shinedown, Brent and Zach can often be found topping the rock charts and playing to sold-out arenas around the globe. Shinedown has achieved astronomical success over the last two decades with over 6.5 billion global streams, 23 #1 Active Rock hits, 15 platinum and gold singles, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification for all of their albums, 10 million albums sold worldwide, and major mainstream media acclaim, including Billboard naming the band #1 on the Greatest Of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists Chart by breaking and maintaining the most ever #1s (19) in the 40-year history of the chart. With Smith & Myers, Brent and Zach illuminate their depth as a duo and showcase a very different yet just as powerful musical side of these two versatile musicians.

HEALY (Orion Free Concert Series)

WEATHER UPDATE: EVENT HAS MOVED TO GROWLERS @ 8PM

WEATHER UPDATE: EVENT HAS MOVED TO GROWLERS @ 8PM

About the Artist:

Memphis-based Healy lived a double life during his first few years as an active musician, going to med school by day and making music by night. Somewhere between laid-back hip-hop and acoustic singer/songwriter styles, Healy broke through with dreamily catchy singles like “Reckless,” from his 2017 debut album Subluxe, and evolved into more R&B-informed styles on subsequent releases like 2021 album Tungsten, and stand-alone singles like his 2023 Cautious Clay collaboration “Famous Last Words.” Ethan Healy was born in Memphis in 1993. Growing up in Midtown, he soaked up his city’s unique social and musical energy. After finishing high school, he taught himself guitar and even released a few acoustic-leaning tracks online before switching his focus to hip-hop. In 2015, going by Healy, he uploaded his debut EP, A Galaxy with Skin, and it quickly caught on. He was immersed in med school as his music career began taking off, but he found a way to focus on both pursuits for the next several years, releasing singles like 2016′s “Phantoms” and a full-length album, Subluxe, in 2017. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine with a degree in physical therapy in 2018. In 2019 he returned with the melodic new single “Tucson.” Throughout 2020, he teased the release of his next record by slowly releasing new tracks, all of which were collected on the 2021 full-length Tungsten. After the release of this sophomore album, Healy didn’t resurface until June of 2023, when he shared a new song, “2D,” and quickly followed it the next month with “Famous Last Words,” made in collaboration with Cautious Clay.

Cyrena Wages (Orion Free Concert Series)

HEAD’S UP SHELL FANS: Tonight is Memphis Zoo Rendezvous and will be huge crowds entering Overton Park! For your best experience, we suggest carpooling, walking/biking to The Shell!

About the Artist:

“The Wages’ were run out of North Carolina for stealing horses and other boorish behavior. We settled in North Mississippi and evolved into three groups: the preachers; the drunks and the outlaws; and then kind of a mid-range group. I came from the mid-range group.”

Cyrena Wages fell in love with music on the country backroads between Millington and Shelby Forest, two small towns just north of Memphis. Her upcoming debut album, Vanity Project, is both an exercise in rebellion against years of conditioning, as well as a way of processing her own struggles, healing, and growth. As much as Memphis shaped her positively, there were aspects of growing up as a woman in the South that didn’t align with who she wanted to become. Cyrena tapped producer Matt Ross-Spang (Charley Crockett, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Margo Price) to helm Vanity Project at Southern Grooves Studio in Memphis.

“It had been a really long time coming. I was getting ready to make this record,” says Cyrena, “and I heard about a music biz guy saying—before ever hearing my song —’Yeah, but she’s kind of a vanity project, right?’”

And just like that, the album had roots and the title track was born. “I just feel ready, when I haven’t felt ready before. Everybody comes to terms with themselves on a different timeline. It took me a second, but now it’s my time.” Find Cyrena’s first two singles from the record on all platforms now.

Vanity Project is slated for release May 24th, 2024.

The Arcadian Wild (Orion Free Concert Series)

About the Artist:

The Arcadian Wild is a four-piece indie folk/pop group from Nashville, TN. Led by songwriters Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick and Bailey Warren on fiddle, The Arcadian Wild confidently inhabits and explores an intersection of genre, blending the traditional with the contemporary.  Combining elements of progressive bluegrass, folk, and formal vocal music, The Arcadian Wild offer up songs of invitation; calls to come and see, to find refuge and rest, to journey and wonder, to laugh and cry, to share joy and community and sing along.

The band’s 2023 album Welcome marks the start of a captivating new chapter for the genre-bending trio, who returned to the studio with renewed purpose and insight after devoting the last few years to a series of critically acclaimed singles and EPs. Like much of the band’s catalog, the album blurs the lines between chamber folk and progressive bluegrass, drawing on everything from country and classical to pop and choral music with lush harmonies and dazzling fretwork, but this time around there’s a rawness to the writing, an embrace of candor and simplicity that cuts straight to the heart of things like never before. The result is perhaps the most arresting collection yet from a band known for its ability to stop listeners dead in their tracks, an exquisitely beautiful celebration of community, connection, and the power of belonging that feels tailor-made for these challenging times.

UPDATE: EVENT MOVED TO MINGLEWOOD HALL

Festival Schedule:

5:20-5:40: Abe Partridge

5:45-6:30: The Sonny Wilsons

7:00-8:30: Matthew Sweet

About Matthew Sweet:

Matthew Sweet moved to Athens, GA at the urging of his pen pal, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe in the early 1980s. Sweet honed his craft in the flourishing alternative rock scene playing with Oh-OK, Lloyd Cole, the Golden Palominos, Buzz of Delight, and recording two critically-acclaimed solo records before emerging in 1991 as the leading figure of the American power pop revival with the release of his watershed album, Girlfriend.

Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, Sweet adhered to traditional songcraft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Recorded with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine, Girlfriend became a word-of-mouth critical and commercial hit over the course of 1992, with its title track reaching the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts. For the next five years, as alternative rock was the dominant commercial force in rock & roll, Sweet became a very popular concert attraction and solidified his reputation as the premiere alternative pop singer/songwriter. His next two records, Altered Beast (1993) and 100% Fun (1995) were both critically acclaimed and successful albums, with the latter reaching platinum status and making many year-end best-of lists.

Sweet continued to evolve over a string of well-received albums in the early 2000s. In 2006, he joined forces with Bangles frontwoman Susanna Hoffs to record a series of covers from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, Under the Covers, Vol. 1–3. Sweet’s music has appeared in numerous films, television shows, and games, including Austin Powers, Guitar Hero II, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Simpsons, and Scooby-Doo, among many others. Sweet was a lead consultant on Tim Burton’s Margaret Keane biopic Big Eyes in 2014. His 15th studio album, 2021’s Catspaw (Omnivore Recordings) is guitar-driven: 12 songs, lean and consistent, direct, and notably darker than Sweet’s recent song-cycles. Apparent in tracks like “Best of Me” and album-opener “Blown Away,” the inner-turmoil harkens back to the angst of 1993’s Altered Beast. But where Beast was the self-interrogation of an artist in his mid-20s, Catspaw is the confessions of a career artist, mature and assured in his craft and achingly transparent in his confrontations of aging and the search for meaning. “I’m trying to get my head around getting older, I want to let go, I want to tell the ugly truth … I want to do all kinds of different things in my head and they really popped out in these songs.”

About Abe Partridge:

Abe Partridge is a heralded musician, singer/songwriter, visual artist, and podcaster based in Mobile, Alabama. His 2018 debut, Cotton Fields and Blood For Days earned him rave reviews, with Tony Paris saying in The Bitter Southerner: "He plays guitar the same way he writes lyrics, bashing the strings with abandon until they are just about to come loose, then beautifully picking the notes until every last word falls into place. More to the point, Partridge writes to make you sit up and think. He wants to jar your reality.  Sometimes, his lyrics are sly and subtle. Sometimes they come at you with a roar and thunder, as if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were approaching, and the heavens were opening up to herald a warning."

Since the release of his debut, Partridge has toured relentlessly, including several tours of the Netherlands and the U.K. developing a reputation for moving, passionate, and sometimes comedic, performances at prestigious songwriter festivals such as 30A Songwriters Festival, Frank Brown Songwriters Festival, and Americanafest. He is a regular at the Bluebird Café in Nashville and Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. He has performed on the syndicated radio programs, Mountain Stage and Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. He has shared the stage with Morgan Wade, Paul Thorn, Steve Poltz, Dan Bern, Jerry Joseph, Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket), Tommy Stinson, Shawn Mullins, John Fullbright, and more.

Most recently, Partridge and co-producer Ferrill Gibbs released the Alabama Astronaut podcast, where they explore songs previously undocumented at churches in Appalachia. The podcast finds Partridge chatting with Holiness preachers and looking into the practice of snake handling. It was in the Top Ten documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release and now has over 40k downloads and a 4.9-star rating.

When Partridge is not writing or touring, he is also a highly acclaimed visual artist. His paintings, primarily acrylic on tarred board and watercolors, now hang in art galleries around the southeast and in the private collections of Tyler Childers, Mike Wolfe (American Pickers), Rick Hirsch (Wet Willie), and Tommy Prine. His artwork was featured in Stephen King’s 2019 sequel to The Shining - Dr. Sleep. He painted the cover art for Charlie Parr’s, Last Of The Better Days Ahead (Smithsonian Folkways). He also created art for Tyler Childers’ 2022 release, Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?

American Songwriter Magazine said, “Abe Partridge has established himself as one of the most respected songwriters and visual folk artists in the southeast.”

Partridge's exhibit With Signs Following was on exhibition at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center in Mobile, AL from January 13 - May 20 of 2023 and is expected to travel to other city contemporary art centers in the next few years. His full-length studio album, Love In The Dark, on BCPR label, was released on May 12, 2023.

5:30PM DOORS | 6:30PM NICK SHOULDERS | 7:30PM SIERRA FERRELL

About Sierra Ferrell:

One of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today, Sierra Ferrell brings a dose of beautifully strange magic to everything she touches. Since the arrival of Long Time Coming (her acclaimed debut LP for Rounder Records), the West Virginia-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist has earned the Emerging Act of the Year prize at the Americana Honors & Awards, collaborated with the likes of Margo Price and Old Crow Medicine Show, and enchanted audiences all over North America and Europe with her high-spirited and dazzling live performance. On her new album Trail Of Flowers, the Nashville-based artist expands her sound while deepening the urgency of her songs, often revealing a wealth of wisdom within her wildly imaginative storytelling.

Her first full-length since Long Time Coming—a 2021 release that drew praise from outlets like Pitchfork, Paste, Pop Matters, and No Depression—Trail Of Flowers came to life with producers Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton) and Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Gillian Welch) and with such esteemed musicians as Chris Scruggs. In keeping with a musical upbringing that included playing everywhere from truck stops to boxcars to New Orleans street corners, the album journeys from freewheeling bluegrass to heartrending old-time music to fantastically gritty honky-tonk and beyond, endlessly changing shape to accommodate the immense scope of Ferrell’s eccentric musicality. Mainly recorded at Sound Emporium Studios and featuring guest appearances from singer/songwriters Lukas Nelson and Nikki Lane, Trail Of Flowers ultimately fulfills her longstanding mission of making music that transcends all barriers of time. “I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past, but excited about the future of music,” Ferrell points out.

Instantly proving her extraordinary capacity to merge timeless musicianship with lyrics exploring modern concerns, Trail Of Flowers opens on “American Dreaming”: a world-weary yet soul-stirring track that speaks to the struggle to build a good life in a culture consumed by capitalism. Another song informed by her singular outlook on the modern world, “Fox Hunt” takes the form of a furiously stomping epic driven by galloping rhythms and some feverish fiddle work from Ferrell. On “Rosemary,” she delves further into her old-time roots and delivers the album’s most haunting moment: a stark but spellbinding story-song graced with a few bars of soulful yodeling. A profoundly gifted vocalist, Ferrell often captures an entire world of feeling in just a single line, particularly on tracks like “Dollar Bill Bar”—a swinging but wistful number on which she cycles from longing to regret to devil-may-care attitude with impossible ease. And on “I Could Drive You Crazy,” Ferrell serves up one of the most joyful moments on Trail Of Flowers, sharing a harmony-fueled and singalong-ready love song that’s both self-effacing and gloriously fun.

In selecting a title for her latest body of work, Ferrell chose to reference her deep love of flowers and affinity for surrounding herself with gorgeously colorful blossoms—a perfect reflection of her wondrous inner world. As a listening experience, Trail Of Flowers provides a similar sensation of all-enveloping and off-kilter beauty—one that Ferrell hopes might lift others into a more charmed state of mind. “I’m just trying to put words and melodies together and build it into something people can pour their feelings too, all their happiness and sorrows, so that it changes their reality a little bit and gives them some comfort,” she says. “To me music is like medicine. And whenever I write a song and it feels healing to me, I know it can heal other people too.”

Stax Music Academy Showcase (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Memphis has given the world some of its most memorable melodies. But whether it’s blues, gospel, rock-and-roll, or R&B, the one thing Memphis music has always had is plenty of is soul.

At Stax Music Academy (SMA), a registered 501 (c) (3), we are helping instill soul in the next generation of Memphis artists. SMA is an after school and summer music institute located adjacent to the home of the legendary ’60s-’70s soul record label Stax Records, now the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

Founded in 2000, SMA exists to continue the legacy of Stax by nurturing the musicians of tomorrow.

Stax Music Academy students take classes in music theory, preparing them to read music with proficiency, read and perform all twelve major and minor scales, and apply harmonic analysis to a musical selection. Students are required to participate in moderated juries at the end of each semester that tests both their performance acumen and their western theoretical grasp of music. Students learn the art of storytelling and composition to create their own music plus music business to assure each young artist understands how to make a living in music. Success is defined individually for each student.

Our programs teach more than notes, however. Stax Music Academy helps students enhance their character by teaching skills in leadership, teamwork, and discipline. The end goal is to prepare graduates for post-primary success regardless of path, whether it be attending college or entering the music workforce.

Since its founding, Stax Music Academy has graduated more than 4,000 students. Since 2008, every high school senior has been accepted to a college or university, many on full scholarships. Academy alumni can be heard around the world, teaching, performing, recording, and more at he highest levels of the music industry.

Cowboy Mouth (Orion Free Concert Series)

Cowboy Mouth (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Much like gumbo, the famous dish of their hometown, the New Orleans-born Cowboy Mouth uses a potent blend of musical ingredients - rock, blues, punk, funk, country, pop, soul and whatever else feels good – to create their bodacious, kickass tunes. Frontman, drummer, and co-founder Fred LeBlanc has asserted “if The Neville Brothers and The Clash had a baby, it would be Cowboy Mouth." His description not only reflects the group’s amazing diverse sound, but it also conveys the fire and commitment they bring to their music.

Cowboy Mouth has perfected their wonderfully rambunctious style over the band’s three decades together. During that time, they have sold over a half a million albums domestically, performed before more than 10 million people, and played over 3,000 concerts. These relentless road warriors built their reputation and developed their devoted fan base through powerhouse live performances (frequently averaging 250 gigs a year). “With every show, no matter where it is, we try to turn it into New Orleans during the middle of Mardi Gras,” LeBlanc proclaims. “It's like a southern gospel revival without the religion” – unless your religion is rock ‘n’ roll!

Cowboy Mouth formed in 1990, and their festive, free-wheeling style stood in sharp contrast to the then-popular grunge sound. In 1996, the band signed with MCA and their major label debut, Are You With Me?, spawned their biggest hit, “Jenny Says,” which cracked the top 40 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock and Alternative Rock charts. Their tunes have appeared in films ranging from the crime drama The Underneath (which featured them performing on screen) to the family comedy Meet The Robinsons. After doing several more albums on MCA Records and then Atlantic Records, Cowboy Mouth has continued to get their music to the people with a series of well-received independent and self-released albums.

New Orleans and Louisiana have always been special places for Cowboy Mouth, who are inductees in The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame. Their tune, “Mardi Gras State Of Mind,” featuring another NOLA luminary Big Sam Williams (of Big Sam’s Funky Nation) on trombone, delivers a joy-filled, footloose tribute to the world-famous carnival.

LeBlanc (previously of the punkabilly band Dash Rip Rock) and former Red Rocker guitarist John Thomas Griffith have been guiding Cowboy Mouth from the very beginning. Bassist Brian “Bruiser” Broussard joined the group in 2014, and quickly developed a telepathic groove with drummer LeBlanc (Broussard, by the way, is a beermaster too). The band’s newest member is Frank (aka Frankie G) Grocholski, who has teamed up with Griffith to create a formidable two-man guitar army.

The phrase “Cowboy Mouth” typically is defined as “one with a loud and raucous voice,” and the term fits the band too. This is especially true for their legendary live performances that have been described as celebratory, life-affirming experiences possessing the ability to save souls. The galvanizing connection between band and fans is one reason Cowboy Mouth has stayed strong for so many years. LeBlanc, however, offers another explanation: “bullheaded tenacity and determination, with a pretty healthy dose of faith.”

Sweet Lizzy Project (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

In just a few years, Cuban-born, Nashville-based quartet Sweet Lizzy Project has gone from its members never having been in an arena, to mesmerizing an audience of 20,000 people when opening for their idols, Heart and Joan Jett. Along the way, the anthemic rock band earned a prime performance broadcast for PBS’s Havana Time Machine, an artist profile on NPR’s “Weekend Edition”, and a cover story in the Miami Herald.

SLP defected to the U.S. from Cuba in late 2017, just as the border doors were set to close once again. Prior to relocating to Music City, Sweet Lizzy Project became the “it band” around Havana City clubs. SLP also won several music prizes, including two nominations for Cuba’s closest equivalent of a Grammy. However, everything changed for the band when they were spotlighted on Havana Time Machine, which also featured traditional Cuban artists and iconic American roots-rockers, The Mavericks. During the making of the documentary, The Mavericks’ founder and lead singer, Raul Malo, became inspired by Sweet Lizzy’s music and story and signed SLP to his band’s record company.

Sweet Lizzy Project plays electrifying big stage pop-rock with a modern sheen and classic rock heart. Diaz is a lightning bolt of a front woman; her lyrics are boldly vulnerable, and her vocals range from seductive soft tones to rafter-rattling high tones. Her creative partner is world class engineer/producer, songwriter, background vocalist, and dazzling lead guitarist Miguel Comas. Diaz and Comas are joined in Sweet Lizzy Project by talented guitarist and bass player, Wilfredo Gatell, and skilled drummer Angel Luis Millet.

SLP has three albums: Heaven (2015), Technicolor (2020) and Pirate Radio / Radio Pirata (2022). The band has performed in the US, coast to coast, and has opened shows for acts such as Heart, Joan Jett, Johnny Swim, The Mavericks, Raul Malo, Jamey Johnson, Buckcherry, Billy Strings, Silvana Estrada and Carlos Varela.

The release of their latest album, Pirate Radio / Radio Pirata, received immediate DSP support, with key playlist adds across New Release, Rock & Latin playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, as well as airplay from multiple terrestrial stations and The Latin Alternative, widely syndicated among NPR affiliates. Their Fall Pirate Radio Tour included concerts in Nashville, Miami, Atlanta, New York, Washington DC, Austin, Houston, and festivals like Live on the Green (Nashville, TN), RiverBend (Chattanooga, TN) and Mile Of Music (Appleton, WI).

“Lisset Díaz, of the Sweet Lizzy Project, was definitely an anomaly in Cuba, land of salsa, timba and son. But when she got her first guitar as a teenager, Díaz said she was drawn to American rock.”-Miami Herald

“Hotstar: Sweet Lizzy Project - American Music By Way Of Cuba... Sweet Lizzy Project sounds like raucous American indie rock. Like The Mavs, SLP positively rocks... The band owes as much to influences such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Florence + The Machine and Alanis Morrisette as it does more traditional Cuban artists they grew up with like Benny Moré or Celia Cruz.” - Pollstar

“Being discovered by Raul Malo — the lead singer and founder of The Mavericks — would be a cool enough launching point for most bands, but Sweet Lizzy Project is not looking to have its story defined by its starting point. The five-piece from Cuba has come stateside and offers a hybrid of classic psychedelic rock and an island roots vibe that should reach a wide base audience that just wants to enjoy upbeat music. There are clear 70s influences but by mixing subtle notes of most all of the last five decades it keeps each track unique. Lead vocalist and writer, Lisset Diaz (a Latinx version of Paramore’s Hayley Williams) is not the stereotypical front woman, as she was at the top of her class in biochemistry, though songwriting and music were always her passion. The band is rounded out with co-writer and bandleader Miguel Comas — who is possibly Cuba’s most respected record producer and rock guitarist — as well as Wilfredo Gatell on bass, and drummer Ángel Luis Millet.” – American Songwriter

About the Artist:

Blvck Hippie is an Indie Rock Band from Memphis, TN tryna show Black kids they can be weird too.

Blvck Hippie makes VHS-inspired music for anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider. By melding an emo sensibility with an indie rock aesthetic Blvck Hippie creates tunes for getting unstuck, existing weirdly, and finding togetherness. Raw vocals pair with sticky guitar riffs, heart-wrenching lyrics, and heavy breakdowns to create a live show for all of us raging inside. With their firmly indie attitude, refusal to accept the status quo, and knack for pushing musical boundaries, Blvck Hippie has turned being an outsider into their superpower.

Blvck Hippie released their debut LP, If You Feel Alone At Parties in Fall 2021. Since then they’ve been touring across the US and Europe carving out a place for themselves on festival stages, at basement shows, and everywhere in between. Jasmine Albertson (KEXP) perfectly captures the must-experience nature of a Blvck Hippie show: “While their recorded material is fantastic, seeing the Memphis-based band live is an even more remarkable experience. The pure joy that emanates from every member of the primarily POC band is infectious and an absolute gift, especially considering the pain and hardships that inspired these songs.” In searching for a place to belong, Blvck Hippie is bringing us all along.

About the Artist:

Born and raised in Alabama, Lamont Landers grew up absorbing the soulful sounds of the South that surrounded him. At the age of 14, he taught himself how to play guitar, and, at the age of 19, began singing. He spent years quietly honing his talents behind his bedroom doors, listening to records by Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Sly & The Family Stone, and Ray Charles on repeat. At the age of 22, a candid video recorded by his sister of Lamont performing the Ray Charles’ classic “Hit the Road Jack” went viral on YouTube and garnered over 400,000 views overnight. In the summer of 2023, history repeated itself with similar enthusiastic fan response propelling five Lamont Landers TikTok videos to over 1,000,000 views each. A feature on the Bobby Bones nationally syndicated radio show and shoutouts from music tastemakers ranging from Snoop Dogg to Questlove soon followed. No longer a secret of North Alabama, Lamont will be touring throughout North America in 2024.

Cedric Burnside (Orion Free Concert Series)

Cedric Burnside (Orion Free Concert Series)

  • 1928 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38104 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

The official credit tells it like it is. “Recorded in an old building in Ripley, Mississippi” – that’s all the info we get, and all that we need.

When Cedric Burnside prepared to record Hill Country Love, the follow-up to his 2021 Grammy-winning album I Be Trying, he set up shop in a former legal office located in a row of structures in the seat of Tippah County, a town with 5,000 residents that’s known as the birthplace of the Hill Country Blues style.

Certainly, plenty of things have happened in Cedric Burnside’s life since he went on the road at age 13, drumming for his grandfather, the pioneering bluesman R.L. Burnside. His two albums before I Be Trying – 2015’s Descendants of Hill Country and 2018’s Benton County Relic – were both nominated for Grammys. He has also appeared in several films, including Tempted and Big Bad Love (both released in 2001) and the 2006 hit Black Snake Moan, and he played the title character in 2021’s Texas Red.

Burnside is a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship, the country’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts and was recently recognized with the 2024 Mississippi Governor's Art Award for Excellence in Music. He has performed and recorded with such diverse musicians as Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, and Widespread Panic.

Yet as the title of the new album indicates, Burnside has never strayed far from the distinctive blues style introduced to the world by his “Big Daddy” R.L. and such other greats as Junior Kimbrough, Jessie Mae Hemphill, and Otha Turner. “I’ve been traveling my whole life, and the song ‘Hill Country Love’ gave me a chance to let people know that I love what I do and give a sense of how we do it in Mississippi – like, the house party is a tradition here, Big Daddy threw a lot of them. So that's what I was thinking about as I was writing that song – where I come from and also where I'm going, and how my journey has been to get to where I'm at now.”

At the same time, Burnside sees himself as an inheritor, not an imitator, of his native region’s blues style. “Big Daddy’s music, Junior’s music, Mister Otha’s music – my music is similar to theirs, but I'm a younger generation,” he says. “Whether we want to or not, we move on, and so my music will automatically sound a little more modern. But even if I tried to sound really modern, that old feel and old sound is just there. You might hear a song and think. ‘Wow, that sounds like it was recorded in 1959.’ I like that, but it's really just me growing up around it and falling in love with that sound.”

To Cedric Burnside, Hill Country Love is a culmination of a career that’s already seen astonishing accomplishments and only keeps growing. What he wanted this time out was a real sense of honesty and integrity. “I compromised a little bit with my albums in the past,” he says, “and I didn't really have to compromise with this one, because I did it by myself. I paid for the engineer, paid for the musicians, I didn't have a record company there. We just went to play music, and how it came out was how it came out – and it came out great.

“I have to be true to where I'm coming from,” he continues. “On this album, the feeling that I had was like, I’m going to write what I feel, I’m going to write what's going on. Life gives you good and life gives you bad and you have to cope with it however you need to cope with it. My way of coping with things is through my music, so I thank the Lord for music. I really do.”

About the Artist:

Best described as “neo soul”, the Australian band KINGS and ASSOCIATES’ live show is both powerful and poignant. Awarded three Australian Blues Music Awards on the back of their second album TALES of a RICH GIRL, which was produced by 7-time Grammy winner Jim Scott. The band features a vocal powerhouse led by principal songwriter Angii Portolesi, singing her ‘life stories’ with honesty and vulnerability. Adding to the vocal lineup is guitarist Benny Cunnigham, whose soulful voice has been compared to the great crossover artist Johnny Guitar Watson. The vocal trifecta is completed by multi- instrumentalist and keyboardist Greg Jones. Rounding out this exceptional lineup is bassist and songwriter Stephen Portolesi, guitar virtuoso Matt Williams who is described as “the most under-rated guitarist in music today”, the punchy and powerful drummer, Kelvin Sugars, and keyboardist Paul White. This seven-piece lineup delivers the best of Neo-Soul music with a Blues twist in the industry today.

After two long years of Covid lock down in their home state of South Australia, Kings and Associates returned to the U.S. for their third American Tour in the summer of 2023, playing their way across the Heartland with performances at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Parkway Bank Park in Chicago, and multiple Levitt venues. With each performance, the band seemed to reach new heights and won the hearts and minds of music lovers at each stop along the way. Post tour, the band signed with the Toronto based AMG Corporation and a subsequent distribution deal with Sony Music.

2024 will be a big year for KINGS as they prepare to record and release their fourth studio album on Big Wing Records, and plans are in the works for multiple U.S. Tours.
