Shell on Wheels Presents 5 Fridays of Jazz ft. The Galaxy’s Edge Quintet

  • Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library - Memphis Public Library 3030 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN, 38111 United States (map)

What better way to kick off your weekend than with the coolest cats in town?

Starting Friday, February 27th, Shell on Wheels returns to the Memphis Public Libraries to highlight the smooth sounds of our city. In it’s 10th year of programming, 5 Fridays of Jazz will feature a rotating lineup of performers who are preserving Memphis’ place in the world of Jazz.

Following every Friday thereafter—throughout the month of March—the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library will play host to talented artists, of which include famed names Joyce Cobb, and come from acclaimed acts such as the Memphis Central High School Band.

To compliment the tunes, tasty food and beverages will be available for purchase, provided by Jus Enuff Concessions and Kaye’s Pints & Scoops.

GET TO KNOW THE ARTIST:

The Galaxy's Edge Quintet is an instrumental ensemble of unique improvisers,

specializing in both late-60s modal repertoire and original compositions by its  members. The group is led by Memphis music veteran Khari Wynn, also known  as James Equinox, who has over 30 years of experience. He spent more than 15 years  touring with and serving as musical director for the award-winning hip-hop group Public  Enemy, and continues to record and make select appearances with them. Over the  years, he has also worked with Memphis legends Shirley Brown and Joyce Cobb. In  Memphis, he is a member of long-running groups including Hope Clayburn's Soul  Scrimmage and The Bluff City Backsliders, and performs in an improv collective with  local stalwarts Art Edmaiston and Alex Greene. James Equinox is the adopted spiritual  moniker of his broader musical identity, and some of his compositions under that name  will be featured during the concert.

He leads a  long-running Sunday jazz jam at The Cove, an incubatory musical laboratory for new  ideas and developing musicians, and has been central to several ensembles that push  the evolution of the current scene.
